“Happiness” Animated Short by Steve Cutts | Brilliant Mirror of Consumerism

Steve Cutts, short animation,Happiness

Steve Cutts short animation Happiness

“The story of a rodent’s unrelenting quest for happiness and fulfillment.”
Directed and animated by Steve Cutts.

It’s a brilliant demonstration of how people in our culture become convinced through advertising that is propaganda to keep the machine oiled, that happiness lies outside of them, through something you purchase…and that you have to pay your dues and relentlessly work hard to reach the crème de la crème.

Steve Cutts has come up with another soul transforming animation that causes us to see our own lives and lifestyles as a treadmill of consumerism and the lie that we live. Ever on a quest to buy something external, thinking that this will bring happiness, while we kill the essence of what we all work for, and go on vacation for, the paradise in which we live of beauty and wonder of our natural world and all of the creatures which we share it with.

Cutts creations are brilliant. It is art and psychology at the grandest scale; a mirror into humanity, especially what the Western ideals have invested in and exported unfortunately to the rest of the world. For example, I’ve heard that the various cultures around the world that have allowed Fast Food to visit their lands, are now also suffering from the same sickness of excess as many people in the west, with diabetes and obesity. Guess what, most illness can be proactively prevented with eating nutritional food, staying away from junk food and regularly doing aerobic exercise. No need for Pharma, no need for gyms…Much of our happiness, down right laughter and love, can be gained through simply doing things that we love and observing and being in nature.

I was enthralled and absolutely stunned by this artist – Steve Cutts’ – animation several years ago entitled “Man” which I wrote about in this blog a few years ago. It spoke loudly to my heart. https://digesthis.wordpress.com/2014/12/09/man-animation-by-steve-cutts-revolution/. It displays man’s blithe indifference to other life forms and violence against them – throughout human history – in the name of self adornment and consumption, without regard to other creature’s inherent right to life and a pleasant existence.

Hurray for artists who reveal us to ourselves!

Happiness & Healing Oneself | Your Choice of Mind & Heart

It’s another one of those times when I’ve come across a subject that I feel is of such import that I post it on both blogs simultaneously.

In the last days I read and viewed this information, which is one small extract of many peoples experiences of either making themselves ill or healing themselves, through their own attitude and what they anticipate. If you think that someone is going to react in a certain way or something is going to happen in the way that you expect, good or bad, typically, because this is the window you’re looking through and the way that you approach the situation, it more than likely will.

Here is the youtube video of Lissa Rankin, MD’s TED talk – a presentation of the results of her research. YES, she researched and found her proof. Rankin addressed in her TED talk a group of health care professionals talking about how much their caring intention influences the health and healing of their patients.

There may be all sorts of incidences that occur throughout the day which may trigger a stress response. Regardless of the source of the stress, our body releases stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine. The body responds to stress by producing hormones that are ingrained into the ‘fight or flight’ response which is genetically built-in, from the times when humans actually did have to be prepared to promptly face or flee a threat such as a wild animal or severe weather condition. Yet, it is us who decide how to respond emotionally to interpret a situation as something inducing stress; a perception of monetary, marital, social problems, work conflicts, situational discomforts or environmental hazards etc. Our body doesn’t distinguish between the source of our stress, it simply responds to our emotional response by chemically producing hormones to interpret our emotional reaction.

You basically do have a choice in how you respond to circumstances.

The point is to actively pursue experiences that lead to feeling happier and to alleviate the stress. Making a conscious choice to allow oneself to relax, enjoy one’s environment, to enjoy simple things, engage in activities like meditation and other practices that facilitate a deeper conscious breathing, physical exercise, participating in experiences that engage with nature, eating healthy foods, spending time in the company of positive people and interacting with all sorts of animals; therapy dogs specifically elicit happy hormones because of their unconditionally loving nature. Make a point of acknowledging with gratitude what you appreciate, attune to all of the different wonderful life forms (animals and plants in our world) that are here around you, and recognize that by participating in creative activities and doing tasks that involve achieving little goals, all lead to developing more insights and a sense of accomplishment. All of these different activities that are coming through the heart, instead of through the head, will lead to the release of hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin, which the body produces in association with feelings of happiness and contentment and a sense of well-being. Laugh! Go out and play!

Yes, it’s a choice.

Speaking of Happiness | Laughter Yoga | the Giggling Guru Madan Kataria

I’ve written two former blogs regarding the subject of happiness. One published on March 10, 2010, in this same blog, regarding guides to living a longer and happier life.

https://digesthis.wordpress.com/2010/03/10/guides-to-living-longer-happier-lives-right-here-right-now

and a previous article about happiness published in my other blog http://carolkeiter.wordpress.com/2009/10/20/happiness

I recently read an article in the New Yorker about laughter yoga, made popular as an exercise routine developed by the Indian physician Madan Kataria.

The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on the scientific observation that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological and psychological benefits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laughter_Yoga
a form of yoga employing self triggered laughter

Having come across this article which was printed in the August 30th, 2010 New Yorker magazine, I have to share it. Woops, I don’t have access to the digital version.

Here’s the link

http://madankataria.posterous.com/giggling-guru-madan-kataria-and-laughter8217s

and here’s an abstract, shamelessly copied and pasted:

ABSTRACT: LETTER FROM INDIA about Dr. Madan Kataria and laughter yoga. In the pantheon of celebrity doctors, Madan Lal Kataria has claimed for himself what is surely the strangest mantle. He is a physician who has transformed himself into the leader of an international movement that promotes laughter as a cure for just about any ailment – physical, psychological, or spiritual. He is known as the Guru of Giggling. Estimates of the number of people who engage regularly in Kataria’s exercises are as high as two hundred and fifty thousand, but there is really no way to gather precise figures. Kataria has said that in India alone there are six thousand laughter-yoga clubs. His clubs, like Tupperware parties, are not really his: the people who form them do so without centralized direction. Kataria sells his services as a public speaker and trainer for his own profit. That is how he earns his living. Writer travels to Bengaluru, India to witness a five-day laughter-yoga session given by Kataria to twenty-one trainees. “Laughter is a choice,” he said. “A connector of people. No barriers. No language.” Kataria told his trainees that laughter yoga “is based upon the scientific fact that, even if you laugh for the sake of laughing, even if you are pretend laughing, your body cannot tell the difference.” There is no such scientific fact, but the idea may contain elements of the truth. Discusses scientific studies of the health benefits of laughter and describes the difference between Duchenne (or involuntary) laughter and non-Duchenne (or voluntary) laughter. Kataria believes that true mirthful laughter can have a liberating, transformative effect—one that momentarily erases all practical concerns, fears, needs, and even notions of time, and provides a glimpse into spiritual enlightenment. Tells about Kataria’s youth in Punjab, his early career as a doctor in Mumbai, and his hopes to become an actor. In 1991, he started a magazine that offered medical advice to lay readers. In 1995, he decided to publish an article called “Laughter—The Best Medicine.” He tested the idea out by asking passersby in a public park if they wanted to laugh with him. Describes the evolution of the club and his decision not to make money from his idea. Considers whether laughter has curative powers and discusses research by Norman Cousins, Lee Berk, and others. At the moment, perhaps the most solid scientific argument one can make about laughter and healing is that it can briefly limit physical pain, though exactly how this works is not fully understood. Writer visits Kataria’s home in Mumbai. Discusses his plans to build an ashram to be called Laughter University.

Bill Maher so boldly and eloquently unveils what we the consumer, blindly succumb to, the marketing tactics of the good ole United States of Apathy.

Where to begin to instate new habits and ways of seeing the world? Start with our unconscious addiction to buying. Consumerism bleeding the natural world.

Anthropocentrism | Vandana Shiva on Social and Environmental Injustice of Industrialism – We are powerful beings in a powerful world

The two blogs I’m currently posting are intertwined, in that they are both on the subject of anthropocentrism, social and environmental injustice and the destruction of the natural world (including occupation of humans) through industrialization and the current capitalism paradigm.

Double Happiness

I had a conversation last evening with an economics student who revealed that the farmers in the USA are squeezed out by licensing and the corporate industrialization of the farming ‘industry’, I recalled instantly that this theme replicates what Hasan Minhaj expressed in his show ‘the Patriot Act’ on the Marijuana industry. Small farmers forced out of the industry because it has become so massive and industrialized.

Vandana Shiva – physicist turned ecological activist – has been an advocate for Indian farmers, tens of thousands of whom were driven to suicide by the actions of Monsanto, who put a patent of ownership on farmers’ seeds. Monsanto is the same company involved in the production of industrial chemicals and insecticides (RoundUp) from their initial creation of nerve gas. She speaks of the arrogance of technocrats and industrialists.

In this interview with FRANCE 24, Vandana Shiva states that Bill Gates ‘is continuing the work of Monsanto’.

In this exceptional interview with Russell Brand, Vandana Shiva talks about the hypocrisy of Bill Gates in this interview with Russell Brand in which she articulately demonstrates her clarity of issues on a grand scale.

In it, she quotes Mahatma Gandhi

the “labor of our body in the service of the earth”.

She states, “We live in a powerful world of energy and as humans, have access to this creative power of the universe through aligning ourselves spiritually – dharma – with the right action.”

I first learned of Vandana Shiva when she spoke at one of the many events of the two week long educational and activism gathering – theplacetob – in Paris, coinciding with the COP 21 in 2015. Among the speakers, Naomi Klein.

We need to recognize – become recognizant – of this power, and occupy our own spiritual paths, intuitively – in community with all of the natural world.

The Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity: An Illustrated 10th Century Iraqi Ecological Fable

Rather than continuing with our current trend of the last centuries of anthropocentrism, as we learn that health, happiness and quality of life is woven into the fabric of health and quality for all networks of life on our planet, we can embrace this work and regard our behavior from the point of view of one of our fellow earthlings.

Fabulous that more than 2,000 years ago, humans had the foresight, love and empathy to consider the right to a good quality of life for all sentient beings.

The Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity: An Illustrated 10th Century Iraqi Ecological Fable Paperback – Illustrated, April 1, 2005

by Ikhwan al-Safa (Author), Rabbi Dan Bridge (Author), Rabbi Kalonymus (Author), Umm Kulthum (Illustrator), Rabbi Anson Laytner (Translator), Seyyed Hossein Nasr (Introduction)

“In this interfaith and multicultural fable, eloquent representatives of all members of the animal kingdom – from horses to bees – come before the respected Spirit King to complain of the dreadful treatment they have suffered at the hands of humankind. During the ensuing trial, where both humans and animals testify before the King, both sides argue their points ingeniously, deftly illustrating the validity of both sides of the ecology debate. The ancient antecedents of this tale are thought to have originated in India, with the first written version penned in Arabic sometime before the 10th century in what is now Iraq. Much later, this version of the story was translated into Hebrew in 14th century France and was popular in European Jewish communities into the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This exquisite English translation, illustrated with 12 original color illumination plates, is useful in introducing young and old alike to environmental and animal rights issues.”

Want to be Blasted into new heights of Awareness? Listen to Arundhati Roy’s ‘Come September’ Speech and then to what Marianne Williamson has to say

Whoops, stalled my writing so far today – regardless of approaching deadline – due to two more mass shootings in the USA (United States of Amnesia). Not to talk about white supremacy or the fact that there are more guns than people in the USA, but to talk about specifically Arundhati Roy’s speech of almost 20 years ago, that brings out the truth of how this govt. is run by very secretive operations and wants nothing more than to continue its policies that spark divisions, in a continued drive towards profit over honest values.

Arundhati Roy full speech 2002 Come September

Funny, it is so apparent as she talks, and yet so cleverly hidden from the public’s awareness. By the way, video game violence merely mimics the mentality of a society whose main objective is to distract the public and continue to play out a military defense regime who uses ‘fear of the enemy’ to continue with policies of putting money into weapons and defense, instead of genuinely putting resources towards enlightening and educating people.

Lannan Foundation, US Globalization Nationalism, Arundhati Roy, Come September

Lannan Foundation US Globalization Nationalism Arundhati Roy Come September

The US regime continues to create the illusion that other human beings threaten our comfortable isolation and energy consumption; that bleeds the rest of the world and drives all creatures’ out of existence, by pretending that nationalism (allegiance to a country) is more important than conscious awareness and truth. As long as we are in economic chains and addicts to consume what is dangled in front of us – with dishonest messages about what will bring happiness (as a profit motive) – we are not free or happy.

Msg from the Future ~Green New Deal~ with AOC | Every Day is Earth Day | Surprise! World’s Happiest, Most Prosocial >Bicycle the Most<

This is the most exciting and cool thing I’ve seen and heard.

The release of this beautifully crafted, stunningly clear and informative message is another spark that is a gift.

The Intercept: A Message From The Future With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

It reaches us through the heart. It’s illustrated by Molly Crabapple, and is a brain child of Naomi Klein and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who contributed to text and is the narrator.

A Message from the Future with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Intercept

You can listen to the making of this message through Democracy Now, “A Message from the Future with AOC”: New Film Imagines World Transformed by the Green New Deal

The idea of creating an image of what we can do, instead of harping on how we messed up. This was the theme among peeps at the Place to B in Paris during the Paris Climate Talks, COP21

‘How to talk about the climate differently.’

We can all keep adding to this with ideas of our own in our own communities. And as we continue to imagine ourselves and come up with things we could do in our own homes and communities, we could actually do these projects together – and the Green New Deal will pay us to do what we love doing. It will raise the standards of living towards health, cleaning up, growing our own food on roofs and creating community gardens, solar and wind on roofs, planting, creating green-ways for pollinators to larger animals and towards tearing down parking lots and planting there, and implementing all sorts of projects in our own communities. Basically completing stopping any oil/petroleum based business, and immediately finding alternatives to driving gas-fueled automobiles. Shift the ownership from private to establishing vast sweeping common areas that are preserved, clean up rivers, plant trees.

It could be quite fun.

The Climate Reality Project states “In report after report, including the IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C, the world’s leading scientific experts have sounded the alarm that unprecedented and aggressive measures must be taken to reduce emissions to safe levels to protect our future.” It is up to all of us to become involved, participate in raising our health and happiness standards, while reducing our carbon footprint.

World Happiness Report 2019

World Happiness Report 2019

The World Happiness Report, 2019 designates all of the Scandinavian countries as topping the list. Socialized healthcare, work/life balance skews towards life, love of the outdoors, high bicycle rates, prosocial behavior, gratitude, transparency, everyone is educated for free and more of a stress on the commonwealth. By the way, Nordic countries have implemented a sophisticated internet broadband technology, as distinct from cellular. Sweden is also one of the most transparent countries in the world and, consequently, one of the most trusting.

Of the World Happiness Report 2019, “Chapter 5 discusses the happiness effects of digital technology use, Chapter 6 deals with big data, while Chapter 7 describes an epidemic of mass addictions in the United States, expanding on the evidence presented in Chapter 5.”

Is it perhaps telling, that these same countries that top the happiness list,

The 10 Happiest Countries In The World In 2019

10 Happiest Countries 2019, Forbes

10 Happiest Countries 2019 Forbes

also among the highest bicycle riders per capita.

It’s not causal, but a correlation for sure. I ride bicycle everywhere. In Berlin, Germany, as in all Scandinavian countries, there’s a well-established infrastructure of bicycle paths. There are many different ways that people transport their children by bicycle.

Child Bicycle Carriers Scandinavia

Child Bicycle Carriers Scandinavia

The infrastructure is integral, and so well designed that I was reprimanded by an elderly woman when I had first arrived in Berlin and road in the city by bicycle, because there’s a distinct bike lane as well as designated pedestrian walking lane. These paths circuit through city streets and continue into the country. They are raised from the car traffic lanes and clearly separated, so that one feels safely removed from vehicles.

It may seem like an extreme encumbrance to many of my contemporary American peers, because of the convenience of hopping in an automobile. Life is slower on a bicycle, and frankly, one find’s oneself taking more of the environment in; with the option to stop, change directions and turn down little ally ways if something piques one’s curiosity.

Many I guess are thwarted by distance, if they live in rural areas or suburbia. That’s because there is barely infrastructure to accommodate public transportation in the USA Today. Rail systems had been in place in some areas of the USA at the beginning of the 20th century, but replaced by a launch into the automotive industry. Living in Germany, I learned that there’s a well integrated train system, connecting all the small towns (in which one can board with one’s bicycle).

As Deepak Chopra said in a guided meditation, “There’s a big difference between speeding by a field or woods in an automobile, and slowing down to take in the life all around you with all of your senses; details of textures, colors, sounds and smells.” As a child, I was raised with the automobile. I also started bicycling early in my life.

Tears of Delight PM of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern’s Well-Being Budget & Maori Guardianship | Friendship Bench

I am in tears of delight as I listen to the statements of the Prime Minister of New Zealand and leader of the Labour Party, Jacinda Ardern, speaking of well-being as the measuring stick at the Davos, Switzerland World Economic Forum. She speaks honestly and earnestly – brilliantly revealing to the other diplomats a lens through which to look that is not measuring the quantity of profits through the GDP, but the quality of life and well-being of the people.

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand, politics of kindness, empathy, well-being

New Zealand politics of kindness, empathy and well-being

Among the leaders of the prohibitively expensive and exclusive Davos World Economic Forum, here is yet another example of a leader stepping outside of the dictates of the norm, to instead be a spokesperson for the quality of life. She states that numbers mean nothing, if people are homeless, if the teen suicide rate is high, if people are emotionally and physically ill. It’s another great step for humanity to have an excellent female leader with the bravery to speak the truth. She’s naturally a tremendous advocate for making changes to avert climate catastrophe.

We all know what disasters continue to strike due to industrial practices that are bent on wielding the highest profits, at the cost of health and life of human and species loss and environmental degradation.

Instead of complete lies, such as what comes from the USA present reality-show-muppet-leader, everything that she says speaks truth, conviction and dignity, from the content of her words to her tone and mannerisms. She speaks honestly, as do a number of recently elected female congresswomen in the US. Hurray for the people who are electing these women leaders throughout the world. It is great news.

Not unprecedented in her ideas, the government of Bhutan conceived of the model of Gross National Happiness as a more real measuring stick than the GDP. You can have a high GDP with great numbers, sales and profits that are off the charts…and as you focus the lens in close, you see that the Amazons and Walmarts that are employing high numbers of stressed people, have paved all of the pristine land; expanded their enterprises along with their parking lots stinking of tar and asphalt and wiped out swaths of land that are habitat to creatures who share the planet.

The construction of the GNH Index includes nine domains

Psychological wellbeing
Health

Cultural diversity and resilience
Good governance
Community vitality
Ecological diversity and resilience

We no longer need an economy bent on profit, so that the computer that I’m using has to be replaced every x amount of years, because of it being built to become obsolete in that short amount of time, as the Superfund sites where the minerals are harvested or skeletons of older models of trash accumulate, to litter and poison water and air. There is absolutely a different paradigm waiting for us around the corner.

Jacinda Ardern aims to to bring the New Zealand Maori philosophy of ‘guardianship’ of the environment into politics.

One of the panelists was Dr. Dixon Chibanda of Zimbabwe. He is one of a total of 12 psychiatrists in the country of Zimbabwe, to serve a population of more than 16 million. He conceived of the idea of training grandmothers to essentially – listen – and the program has been wildly successful. HE created and implemented the ‘practice’ called a Friendship Bench. He talks of the Friendship Bench in this TED talk. Grandmothers in Zimbabwe are trained in cognitive behavioral evidence based talk-therapy; empowering them with the skills to listen, show empathy and provide emotional support.

The grandmothers have actually been more effective than doctors, in treating depression, anxiety, addictions and for patients’ overall success rates.

Grandmother Jack was one of the first grandmothers in Zimbabwe, empowered to provide evidence-based talk therapy. She saw 256 clients whose lives were improved dramatically. She is now deceased.

The Friendship Bench has since been adopted worldwide.

It has morphed to not be simply Grandmothers, but for peers to sit with each other to listen and show their support.  Certainly it helps dramatically the people who are suffering from physical or mental illness, or addiction and emotional trauma. And most brilliantly it also empowers the person who is trained as the listener, who can provide emotional support and empathy.
