“On September 8, 2018, more than 30,000 people rose up for climate action, jobs, and justice in San Francisco — alongside more than 250,000 people in more than 90 countries around the world. We rose to demand our elected officials at all levels of government, everywhere step up and join us in building the just, bold climate solutions people and the planet need. And it was incredible. Check out some of the best photos from Rise actions in San Francisco and across the US here. (Photo credits: Survival Media Agency, unless otherwise noted.) We humans produce noise pollution constantly: beeping cars to lock them, revving motors, sitting in cars with engines idling contributing to rising CO2 levels.

Unaware, uneducated, uninformed, peoples habits collectively are damaging the planet and affecting other animals’ habitats.

I will be dead in 50 years, but your children and their children will not.

What exactly do you want them to inherit? A completely deforested, paved planet with only a hint of other life forms other than humans? The lack of humans to realize how their independent actions contribute collectively to the destruction of the earth and the habitats of other creatures is beyond nearsighted. It is reprehensible. I have said everything I have wanted to say in previous blogs. I have pointed to other writers such as George Monbiot Incompetence By Design, who tells the truth.

Ecological Disaster in Florida | Political Red Tide | Collapsologie | Why Everything Will Collapse

Erin Brockovich persuasively explains in Why You Should Care About The Ecological Disaster In Florida that the red tide and systemic destruction of the Everglades, the most biodiverse area of North America, is due to politics. “The most concerning issue for clean water in the United States today is not chemical, physical or financial, it’s politics. This is not the time to stand down; this is the time to fight. It’s time to inform, educate and inspire action across America so that our communities and leaders are armed with the strongest weapon in politics: facts, answers, truth, and solutions.”

It was as I dug that I uncovered another thorough presentation that lays out the facts.

I’m unapologetically including a politically incorrect comment to this preceding post, “Lake o, re-routing the natural flow of water in the everglades, the canals and the whole dang mess can be laid at the feet of sugar companies that have bought the politician. They’re ruining the everglades the coral reefs and turning Americans into fat diabetic pigs.”

Regardless of the clear view of cause and effect, the mirage of profit valued over life, the destruction continues. Misinformation and business as usual dominates the rally call for continued development; the new and ever improved automobile, air conditioning unit, stocks in insurance, the pharmaceutical industry. Framing everything as if it must always grow and expand, without questioning the principle at all, even though it is obvious we live on a finite planet with limited resources.

An example of the infiltration of politics polluting the media, the mainstream news channel NBC feature story doesn’t get beyond a superficial description. They stay away from even mentioning the true sources of the problem that has been occurring for decades and getting exponentially worse. due to run off from cowswitch deaths camps and Big Dairy, where cattle are cramped in horrific conditions prior to their slaughter, and their run off feeding into Lake Okeechobee.

The NBC news story doesn’t indicate the pesticide agricultural runoff channelled into the lake or even mention the various repercussions from big Sugar also having built massive structures in addition to the Hoover dyke, that blocks the natural flow of water into the Everglades. Underplaying the cause, simply not going there.

Like the organized medical care industry, with gains tied into profits leveraged from Big Pharma, the focus is on symptoms rather than pointing to the source of the illness and clear remedies to proactively steer the process into a healthy direction.

It is only until fairly recently that many of the systemic problems in mass industrialized production have become apparent, through perspectives coming not from mainstream media, but sources who actually are the watchdogs of injustices to humans and animals. One can’t rely on institutions who are beholden to their financial investors to unveil the truth.

With capitalism’s heralded GDP as the dominant global value measuring stick, the compulsion is to continue towards what will increase the accounting books, ever increasing growth through perpetual production. This is with the knowledge of the destruction that it is causing to the most precious parts of our planet. In just the last days the freedom to read and research information through the internet allows us to see what is happening, everywhere. That is, if we pay attention to it.

Perpetual production and economic growth is the slippery slope that is completely embedded in this game.

Thing is, when our perceptions are continuously steered towards what we think is important and we continue to do nothing as one after another decision is made that affects all of us commonly, we allow these rights to be taken without even being aware. We think that we have choices and freedom, without really seeing beyond the myopic goal of acquiring more things to bring us comfort and pleasure.

Frederick Douglass in 1857 wrote Power concedes nothing without a demand

“…Let me give you a word of the philosophy of reform…Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress…”

Only by investing in local, renewable and sustainable sources of energy and an overwhelming focus on education and a campaign that builds awareness of the threats we face that could be assuaged or slowed down somewhat, through exposure to how collectively changing habits could effect big changes. There is plenty of awareness about issues that various regions face and what can be done to stop destruction, yet the biggest battle is the political red tide.

I’m so sorry that I just found this below, perhaps summarizing ‘collapsologie’ which I just learned about from a French artist living in Providence. I was looking for an English version of collapsologie
It’s a manual of what to do in the present to prepare for the collapse.

Instead I found this, with mention of many of their sources, being French ones.
Why Everything Will Collapse

“If you sense that the future looks bleak, that there is little chance that this whole mess will end in joy and good humor, that there is a tiny chance that we will escape a systemic collapse of the thermo-industrial civilization, you are not far from reality. In this video, based on the available data, we try to explain why we think the situation is inextricable and that a systemic collapse is now inevitable.”

Responsible Legislation: Curb Idling Cars & Build Cycling Infrastructure

Rather than diving into where I left off on my book or starting the new blog that is calling me, I just put this together and sent it to the mayor’s office (contact form online). Feel free to copy and paste it if you are aware of this disconnect (lack of awareness) in your own community and wish to send some of the information to your own city government.

Responsible Legislation to curb idling cars and build safe bicycling infrastructure – taking local responsibility for a global problem of extreme warming.

red hot planet article by Jason Samenow for the Washington Post

red hot planet article by Jason Samenow for the Washington Post

In lieu of the fact that global temperatures continue to exceed the ‘normal’ averages, year after year as expressed in this article by Jason Samenow in the Washington Post, Red-hot planet: All-time heat records have been set all over the world during the past week It displays the obvious, human induced global warming. I am currently residing in Providence. I get around on a bicycle everywhere that I live. I joined the mayor’s bike ride on the Thursday evening before the PVDfest, to promote bicycling. I have lived in numerous communities in the United States and in several European cities. For example, Germany has an extensive recycling program and an enormous functional infrastructure for bicycling in urban and rural areas. One is not ‘risking one’s life’ to commute by bicycle as they are in most American places. The city of Berlin, Germany hosts maintained and distinct bicycle paths. The bicycle paths are not merely lines drawn on the road or a logo of a bike lane painted on the road, but actually the bike paths are on the sidewalk, with a designated side for cyclists, the other for pedestrians. Cities in France and Scandinavian countries do the same thing. To ride on the road with only a line designating a bike path, is to me, risking injury and death. Therefore to encourage bicycling rather than discouraging it, infrastructure needs to be created to support safe family bicycling.

The cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands is like a science.

Fietspad bicycle infrastructure in the Netherlands

Fietspad bicycle infrastructure in the Netherlands

The main point of this email is that as someone whose major form of transportation is bicycling, no matter what city or country, I have encountered in just the few months living here in Providence a stupendous number of people who sit in their cars with the engine on, idling, while typically looking down at their phones. People sitting in idling cars are not the exception, but the norm. This is not in exceedingly frigid temperatures or high heat, but pleasant temps. I quickly was able to ascertain that it is everywhere, nothing to do with education, socio economic class, race or age factors. 30% of the population are simply oblivious to how they are contributing to the climate crisis, and sorry to say, along with air conditioning units. I’m sure you are aware of the fact that Americans use much more energy and power than most of the other countries combined, and are directly and indirectly responsible for cataclysmic repercussions everywhere.

You can do the math. I feel the heat as I cycle past cars and smell the exhaust. As an acquaintance mentioned, if people could actually see carbon monoxide, it might be a different story. http://www.silentshadow.org/carbon-monoxide-in-your-car.html
This threat is not observable, like a disease, until it has rendered its affects on the body. Having lived 7 years in Berlin, Germany where I also bicycled, I would see people conscientiously ‘turning off their engine’ even at red lights. What in the world is this complete gap in awareness and education? I would have thought that in a New England capital city there would be a whole lot more awareness and education about this. I have made signs, I have tapped on windows, I have written to the mayor’s office and even mentioned this to the mayor in person during this bike ride.

By the way, sitting on a bus to return to Providence from New York city several weeks ago, the dispatcher called the bus driver and told her to turn off the ignition of the bus while she was waiting another 20 minutes prior to departure, regardless of how hot the bus becomes. She later informed me that in Manhattan, the fine is $2,000 per idling bus. Since people don’t seem to be cognizant whatsoever of their role in contributing to global warming, or their own actions, I suggest like cutting out the sales of HUGE sugary drinks, enforcing awareness upon them through instituting fines if people are found sitting in their cars with the engine on. A fine large enough to deter people from even thinking twice about it. And with the money accrued, build safe and convenient bicycling infrastructure. Lead the country in building community, in attracting people to healthier, sustainable habits that encourage people to exercise more and eat right and have awareness of how their actions affect the entire planet. Lead other cities by example of your proactive legislations.

This city is very, very easy and convenient to get around on bicycle, and it could be made to be even more bicycle friendly. And if you think I’m exaggerating or think that it is unimportant, put 15 of your police officers out on bicycles to see, feel and smell for themselves how an entire metropolitan population is contributing to the climate crisis that we are in, and seemingly completely oblivious. And if you have never heard of or read this prominent British journalist’s writings, I suggest that you do. http://www.monbiot.com/2018/07/02/in-memoriam/

I meditate daily and ask the four forces – earth, air, water and plasma – practicing heart rhythm meditation. My intent is to carry my voice to peoples’ platforms I can participate in and for information and guidance to be carried to me. It’s an intuitive process of trusting in the intelligence and consciousness of the universal force. I feel that many things that appear to ‘happen’ serendipitously, arrive because of intention to connect to this information. Magic? Today, for the first time i clicked on and read this info from this community that I learned of while taking courses when living in Pennsylvania. Interfaith Power & Light: A Religious Response to Global Warming. I’d go to multidisciplinary talks with religious leaders from all these different faiths putting forth their viewpoint on various questions. Opening it, i found out about this, http://globalclimateactionsummit.org/. The Global Climate Action Summit happens to be taking place in San Francisco, September 12th to 14th. Just a week before the ccc reunion.

It seems to be an excellent place to continue to disseminate my idea. The idea started years ago, imagined actually right before the COP21 Paris climate talks, which I went to, to Paris for two weeks with 20 dollars.

Previously I named the idea Eco Revolution, then EcoActivate, because the first was taken.

lo que tu puedes hacer con EChOACTiVate

The idea is to bring the information to the people, through a cyber portal of information, and a mobile unit that comes to a community with needs that people perceive or perhaps aren’t aware of at all, that they can then do together to clean up and build sustainable energy, transportation and to plant community gardens, bee and butterfly highways, plant trees and build animals bridges…

The idea is to bring people together in a celebratory, participatory way. With the knowledge they need to create, transform and participate in greening their own environment.

Education is the tool. People power is the engine.

False Dichotomy | Separate from Environment | Zero Point Energy | John Searl | Brian O’Leary |Thrive

Each of the blogs I’m posting today concern the concept of a false dichotomy. In this case, that between we humans and what we label as the environment, as if you could separate a man from the water he drinks or the air he breaths. You can’t. A human can’t live more than a few days without water or more than a few minutes without air. So why has it been so easy to separate ourselves from the obvious destruction of the means by which we’ve been (in the northern hemisphere since the industrial revolution) extracting energy from fuel sources on our planet? Because we’ve erroneously believed that our sources were limitless, at first. And then the politics of economics compelled the force of nature to be a force to combat, rather than one to emulate, adore and protect. In the carolkeiter blog I talk of this separation from the standpoint of physical and emotional health, of which personal habits and particularly the food that one ingests, can lead to either health or illness. Incredulously, the American Medical Association and other government health offices as well as the majority of medical schools across the country, do not even offer classes in nutrition, nor do doctors talk about the subject to their patients, as Dr. Michael Gregor points out in his talk. Doctors are seduced by pharmaceutical companies to hand out prescription medicine, yet not to talk about diet, when the food that people consume is the leading cause of death due to ‘impoverished’ diets.

https://carolkeiter.wordpress.com/2018/04/26/false-dichotomy-separate-from-self-gabor-mate-michael-grefor-shift/

Humans become ensconced in the activities of their immediate environment, without being aware of larger trends. It can take a long time for the collective species to adequately understand a perspective that time and distance obscures from their immediate perspective.

I spoke of Storytelling and Stories-Not-Sold in The Politics of Economics in a former blog, revealing the facts that pivotal discoveries have been made by different individuals at different periods of time in the last century in the United States that were either forcefully suppressed or the inventor’s equipment confiscated, damaged or stolen.

Professor John Searl, The Godfather of free energy / zero point energy science, believes his magnetic generator, the Searl Effect Generator (SEG), can save our planet from economic and environmental disaster.

Magnetic Current Stirs “Electrons” – John Searl’s SEG

“Changing the art of combusting to get energy which is producing pollution, to one that is natural, the absorbing of natural energy, compressing it and then using it and letting it go; you burn nothing in the process…As electrons come out, electrons are being drawn in, so it can never get hot. The flow keeps getting stronger and speeds up. Conventional currents are slow currents that draw in heat; the more current, the more heat. This system is the opposite, the more current you draw, the colder it gets. Electrons enter and move faster and faster until they change their state and become a superconductor.”

Regarded by many as ‘The Godfather’ of free energy or zero point energy science, Professor John Searl believes his magnetic generator, the Searl Effect Generator (SEG), can save our planet from economic and environmental disaster. So, what if he’s telling the truth?

Because my passion is the desire to alert people to the disposition of the plants and animals that inhabit this world whose environments and habitats are being systematically destroyed, this environmental crisis and ecocide that is occurring is mostly due to the heavy consumption that our current political or economic realities rely upon. Continued emphasis on the market place and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has actually become, as I wrote in this former blog, a Gross Domestic Problem (frankly it’s not domestic at all, but worldwide).

Generating wealth and the continued propagation of products to keep that motor greased, has lead to the degeneration of our environment with pollution and the continued extermination of species who are part of the creation. We have collectively walked away from our connection to the earth and all of its creatures in this treadmill of production and consumption, in which even our concept of happiness and entertainment has become something that is objectified into products, rather than processes.

This dominant matrix of drilling, plowing, extracting, draining and all of the destruction and pollution stemming from the combustion engine and our typical means of extracting energy, is killing everything, and us.

It is not serendipity but eloquent synchronicity of timing that I have come upon one after another mention of the connection of our actions that are devastating our environment, and the fact that there are many cures for diseases and innovations already in the research stages for energy that can be very simply extracted from the space around us, with no delatarious results, side effects or negative fall-out. They are there, but have not been invested in, because of a few individuals and corporations throttling and constricting the information from being freely released to the public. Again, it’s because they have trillions of dollars that they’ve invested.

We have been sort of walking along, following in footsteps of our families and socialized through our education to continue what we’ve learned are the ways to follow, to be an accepted ‘productive’ citizen. We haven’t really questioned this. Often the history and lessons learned get lost, especially in a world in which many people are on a treadmill of continued pursuit of financial demands and time constraints in making ends meet (which continue to grow no matter how financially secure one perceive’s oneself to be).

I bring in the concept of zero point energy, which I first learned about researching my book a few years ago. And now in the last days different sources entirely have brought me to the same focal points. One could say that my whole being has guided me perpetually to this same information, because of the choices I’ve made. I’ve read things in the last week that brought together the concepts of free energy – the energy in the ‘vacuum’ of space everywhere (which is not a vacuum at all), together with the mention of UFO’s and the electromagnetic fields that they operate through and consciousness…and the fact that much of this information is continually suppressed. What? Sounds incongruent, grouping these together.

Well, in fact, the degradation of our environment due to our typical means of extracting energy have been destructive. Yet as I’ve paraphrased this article The Quantum Vacuum: How ‘Empty’ Space is Actually the Seat of the most Violent of Physics’ “Quantum physicists discovered that physical atoms are made up of vortices of energy that are constantly spinning and vibrating, each one radiating its own unique energy signature. This is also known as “the Vacuum” or “The Zero-Point Field.”…This “stuff” within this space can be accessed and used, [which] was experimentally confirmed when The Casimir Effect illustrated zero point or vacuum state energy.[It] predicts that two metal plates close together attract each other due to an imbalance in the quantum fluctuations.

Nassim Haramein, Director of Research at The Resonance Project Foundation is a physicist, public speaker, inventor and educator. In his TEDxUCSD describes ‘The Connected Universe

In fact, astronomer, former astronaut, and author of “The Second Coming of Science” and “Exploring Inner and Outer Space,” Brian O’Leary very eloquently talks of these. It is a long video, yet because he is very clever and succinct, not tedious whatsoever. He is very understandable. I happened upon this video today, pulling together and clarifying numerous articles and videos that I’ve watched.

Brian O’Leary Free Energy and New Paradigms In Science

“Gravity is an electromagnetic force, as is consciousness.”

We presently have an alternative to oil, fossil fuel and nuclear power.

O’Leary speaks of his research into the contemporary science of ‘free energy.

O’Leary speaks of his research into this new understanding. It’s all there, this contemporary scene of ‘free energy’. He points out that whereas many people speak of Nikola Teslas’s invention a century ago, he says there’s currently research going on all over the world, particularly in Japan. This technology is already quite realized. He quite gently says that it’s easy to get angry with the people who have wanted to keep the truth of reality in a box, because of their vested interests.

“We presently have an alternative to oil, fossil fuel and nuclear power. The three basic technologies of ‘free energy’ are cold fusion (technique of introducing Hydrogen into a metal lattice), magnetic motors (magnetic wheels with magnets that rotate and the rotary motion creates an interaction with this zero point energy field – the potential energy field that underlies free energy) and solid state (a crystal or specially conditioned magnet that resonates with the zero point field to extract > put energy into the system.” The role reversal in this country – rather than encourage innovation – inventors in the USA have had their work suppressed, alienated, expatriated, or had their well being threatened, devices confiscated. By the fact that there is no coverage whatsoever .0001% of the climate crisis reveals the corpocrisy maneuvering behind the curtain.”

O’Leary mentions in his talk that the theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler, claimed that “One coffee cup full of space contains enough potential energy to evaporate all of the earth’s oceans.”

We have an answer to our energy problem, we won’t in the future have to rely on any grid system. It naturally threatens the energy industries and utilities that stand to lose trillions in profit. Brian O’Leary states that it is necessary for us to get off of our drunken oil binge since the losses to the environment due to combustion engines has been enormous.

This will open doors to other forms of research: anti-gravity research and consciousness. Our ability to influence the material world – psychokinesis.

As O’Leary states, there are numerous contemporary inventions of one or another that tap into this free energy. Paramahamsa Tewari’s Space Energy or Free Energy Generator.

Thich Nhat Hanh Awaken from our Illusion of Separateness

Thich Nhat Hanh Awaken from our Illusion of Separateness

excerpted from Thich Nhat Hanh’s Love Letter to the Earth

At this very moment, the Earth is above you, below you, all around you, and even inside you. The Earth is everywhere. You may be used to thinking of the Earth as only the ground beneath your feet. But the water, the sea, the sky, and everything around us comes from the Earth. Everything outside us and everything inside us comes from the Earth. We often forget that the planet we are living on has given us all the elements that make up our bodies. The water in our flesh, our bones, and all the microscopic cells inside our bodies all come from the Earth and are part of the Earth. The Earth is not just the environment we live in. We are the Earth and we are always carrying her within us.

Realizing this, we can see that the Earth is truly alive. We are a living, breathing manifestation of this beautiful and generous planet. Knowing this, we can begin to transform our relationship to the Earth. We can begin to walk differently and to care for her differently. We will fall completely in love with the Earth.

When we are in love with someone or something, there is no separation between ourselves and the person or thing we love. We do whatever we can for them and this brings us great joy and nourishment. That is the relationship each of us can have with the Earth.”

Crisis Among the Palms talks about the Palm Oil ecocide, from the Congo basin to Malaysia to Peru. As a relatively new player on global commodity markets, the industry has quickly grown to rely on global financing to fuel its expansion. So it is once again a narrow minded, expansion for quick profit despite the long term and irreparable losses that are to blame. “Having expanded by millions of hectares a year across the tropics in the past several decades, the palm oil industry is a leading cause of rainforest destruction – and a source of both economic dispossession and wage labor for countless people.”

This I introduced in a former blog https://carolkeiter.wordpress.com/2013/11/22/the-truth-earthlings-love-letter-to-the-earth-thich-nhat-hanh-kumi-naidoo-greenpeace-saving-the-earth-from-ourselves-only-after-cree-indians/

We can turn all of this around by informing ourselves and taking actions to demand the implementation of what will bring about a peaceful and thriving revolution of how we operate in society and how we generate energy, transport ourselves, live and work.

The documentary movie Thrive was created by Foster Gamble, bank heir to the multinational and pharmaceutical company Procter & Gamble and his wife Kimberly. He basically stepped aside from the matrix within which he’s ensconced to produce this “unconventional documentary that lifts the veil on what’s REALLY going on in our world by following the money upstream — uncovering the global consolidation of power in nearly every aspect of our lives. Weaving together breakthroughs in science, consciousness and activism. Thrive offers real solutions, empowering us with unprecedented and bold strategies for reclaiming our lives and our future.”

He talks of his inspiration of Buckminster Fuller’s concept of the Vector Equilibrium and of the torus is the underlying structure of the universe. Foster Gamble researched the dynamics of the toroidal energy form and vector equilibrium as primary patterns fundamental to the creation of the universe at all scales. He talks about accessing zero point energy; new energy technology; seeing clean, free energy as a means to transfer the quality of life on this planet. It became clear as he began to follow the money to see why information wasn’t being released, and in the movie he describes the powers that have controlled information and the ways in which we can use this to free ourselves from the paradox of believing that we are separate.

“Who controls the food supply, controls the people;
Who controls the energy, can control whole continents;
Who controls the money, can control the world.”

I was sitting in this cafe and went outside for a pause. What? What in the world? Were these parrots? Birds at night in huge flocks like the parrots in San Francisco who found one another after each having escaped their cages?

The first person whom I asked, a young guy walking down the street in sports clothes, knew immediately the answer. He says that it happens twice a year in Aix-en-Provence. They are Etourneaux, I asked him to write it down for me. He then wrote down the English after looking it up on his phone.

I am in tears again as I read the headlines of this article in the Telegraph.

Starling populations migrate south and west in winter

Starling populations migrate south and west in winter

“The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) blames changes in intensive farming that means trees and hedges have been chopped down so there are fewer places for the birds to roost and breed. The use of chemicals and monoculture has also been blamed for reducing the amount of seeds and insects available for the animals to feed.”

Though I don’t have the equipment to record their sound. I was ASTOUNDED.

The ‘common’ starling. (Sturnus vulgaris), also known as the European starling, or in the British Isles just the starling, is a medium-sized passerine bird in the starling family, Sturnidae. I think it’s vulgar to call it common, the common starling, will be common no more, once they have all declined.

This bird is resident in southern and western Europe and southwestern Asia, while northeastern populations migrate south and west in winter within the breeding range and also further south to Iberia and North Africa.

They were moving – in the darkness – along the trees lining this very famous street. I found this video, which at least documents them.

Frankly, I found this to be the most magical thing I saw all day. I appear to need a new profession.

All Life Has Consciousness | Carl Safina | Are Humans Capable of Letting Other Life Continue?

There is Love on Earth Besides Humans

There is Love on Earth Besides Humans

Carl Safina, PhD in ecology, conservationist, writer

Carl Safina, PhD in ecology, conservationist and writer

I am very grateful to have discovered Carl Safina’s work and this TED talk just a day previous to posting this. Tears ran down my cheeks as I watched and listened to this scientist’s portrayal of animals, and of humans. Tears continued to stream from my eyes after I listened to his last words. I am so disappointed and basically frustrated with what humans deem as important.

I was about to write a blog about Borders? Why are Human Beings ‘Not Allowed’ to Walk Around on the Earth? However, to me, putting this concept out there of recognizing the importance of all other life forms besides humans, is far more important than the absurd political scenarios that humans impose on one another. What we are doing to the natural world and to other life forms, with our over-population, degradation of the environment, human-induced global warming and inciting a mass extinction, to me, far outweighs any of the absurd things that humans are doing to each other. Carl Safina does not by any means bypass this subject in his talk. He says, what humans do to other empathetic creatures is also what they do to one another.

Animals, Carl Safina, Empathy, Sympathy, Compassion

Animals Carl Safina Empathy Sympathy Compassion

I felt an urgent need to immediately post this to both blogs. I feel very sorry for those humans who do not feel compassion and awe with nature and all of life. I thank my parents that nature and an appreciation for all life forms was revered. I grew up with National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines in the home, and was curated to think way beyond my immediate vicinity.

I recently lauded friends who regularly inform and urge people to think about the protection of animals and wilderness. I mention this in association with a concept that is part of a new mode of thinking, systems thinking, seeing all life forms as interrelated. Human beings should prioritize protecting all other life forms, rather than destroying them and wiping out their habitats without any consideration whatsoever. The various bloody traditions of various cultures that consider it ‘sport’ to kill wolves, whales, bulls is disgraceful. The massive consumption of cows, pigs, chickens and use of land to feed these animals needs to be stopped. Wiping out wild horses and donkeys and other creatures because some believe that by eating particular speciality foods that they somehow will maintain their health or erections, also are dramatically mis-informed. Creatures penned in horrible conditions, blood baths and slaughters because of tradition, must all be reconsidered. People need to be educated. It begins with all of us communicating to one another.

The concept of actually recognizing that we share the same genetics and similar brains and spinal cords with other creatures perhaps will bring about a different sense of empathy.

It is the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh who introduces the concept of inter-being; all life is intricately related.

With a PhD in ecology, conservationist and writer Carl Safina has written several books and papers and has studied various species in their habitat. He was invited by Greenpeace to witness the changing climate in the Arctic and the impacts of industrial fishing on the marine environment.

In his TED talk Safina asks:

“What’s going on inside the brains of animals? Can we know what, or if, they’re thinking and feeling? Carl Safina thinks we can. Using discoveries and anecdotes that span ecology, biology and behavioral science, he weaves together stories of whales, wolves, elephants and albatrosses to argue that just as we think, feel, use tools and express emotions, so too do the other creatures – and minds – that share the Earth with us.”

Welcome Human Life with pics of Animals - Shared Lifes in the World

Welcome Human Life with pics of Animals – Shared Lifes in the World

Since humans tend to adorn the rooms of their new born babies with images of the other creatures with which we share our planet, in which every animal of Noah’s Ark is now in mortal danger, instead of asking the question Do animals love us?, We need to ask, Are human beings capable of letting other life continue?

Carl Safina states, “From all I’ve seen, my main conclusion is that at this point in history, nature and human dignity require each other. Where wild places are destroyed, wild animals lost, and the world degraded and polluted, not only is that itself a great loss for the world, but for people in degraded places it becomes almost impossible to maintain a dignified existence.”

This article in the USA Today describes that global warming continues, with each year breaking record temperatures of the previous.”NOAA’s analysis does not include data from the Arctic, while NASA’s does, NOAA climate scientist Deke Arndt said. The Arctic has been warming faster than any part of the world.”

“This announcement should shock no one,” said Lou Leonard of the World Wildlife Fund. “The key question is what we do about it. With the costs of inaction piling up, Washington, D.C., is largely looking the other way. So it is up to a new class of leaders from American businesses, universities, cities and states to pick up the slack.”

Formula for modern dysfunctional relationship with time | Deepak & Oprah | Meditate & Be Intensely Present With Your Moment

Be Intensely Present In Your Moment

Be Intensely Present In Your Moment

Today’s topic of the 21 day meditation presented and hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra was about the pervasive psychological dysfunction of modern man with respect to their relationship to time. I realized that my experiences during my ride to the sea to swim in chilly temperatures and all that approached my senses, was really living this liberation of being fully immersed in the present.

Yesterday on my bicycle ride to the Mediterranean Sea along a path on the river Lez in Montpellier, I was acutely aware of all that was hitting my senses. Fragrances, colors, watching ripples of water surfacing along the river from activity within and considering how space is shaped to create these cylindric waves. Marveling over these trees I love, all in a row that have these massive bases that contain the base of three to five trunks shooting out. They all have this cool mottled bark, rolling contours, curves and indentations. I love to climb them. I looked at the glistening sparkles of water as the mid afternoon sun bounced off different patches along the  river. Coming to the opening of the river to the sea you see contrasts in color and these pink flamingos. I look at the differences in tones and shades and always remember my mother commenting on this on our drive out to New Mexico from Pennsylvania the first time I moved there.  When we reached the desert, she pointed out all of the subtleties of different colors.

Perhaps this is my homage to my ancestors, my parents, who are no longer physically alive. On this All Saint’s Day.

Halloween day, I left my place in the north of town and bicycled along the path along the river Lez from Montpellier to the Mediterranean Sea, to swim. I wasn’t the only fool in the water! After you break the psychological barrier, of the frrrreeeezing water – still not as cold as the ocean by San Francisco in northern California – your body adjusts. Once I finally put my head under, I was fine. Well, it was pretty icy cold that I couldn’t keep it in the water at first, but got used to that too. I love, love, love to swim. I love being in a body of liquid, especially outside in nature. I love the stretching and very slight resistance of swimming. I swam from one boundary of rocks to another, doing breast stroke, back stroke and freestyle. I swam as a kid on the swim team. I mention this because it is so incredibly stimulating to immerse oneself in this cold environment and then to bounce one’s body back to normal temperatures. I had to run to warm up.

I took pictures with my inadequate phone camera of stunning views, which fortunately are crystalized in my memory, for a while. ha huh. I looked closely, following the contours of these lovely ornate trees by the river, looking at their papered skin of differing hues. A little later I saw a large cluster of pink flamingos sitting still on the water in the distance, with the reflection upside down of their pinkness landing from my perspective, several inches below them. These other smaller sea birds were in the foreground, with black heads and white bodies that were smaller and perched in a row, little black and white spots in a line.

I came briefly today as I’m writing this, to Montpellier’s Jardin des Plantes. Every town of any size in France seems to have one.  I listened to quite a chatter of the birds present as the afternoon sun was angling. I heard different species – really quite vocal – recording the clicks and tones.

The whole 21 day guided meditation series is about being in the present, Making Every Moment Matter.

Ironically, today’s meditation is titled “Recognizing and Healing Time Dysfunction”. They each take turns introducing the concepts, Oprah Winfrey leading, and Deepak Chopra, accompanied by a tantalizing acoustic entrance, goes into a more in depth spiritual explanation. Today they talked about extracting oneself from being fixated on either the highs ore lows of whether or not one is accomplishing what one expects to accomplish in a certain time. We’re either delighted to be checking off our list or feeling guilty for not doing so, and letting this dictate determine how we feel. I know that my mother was fixated with this ‘to do’ list, and I’ve genetically and socially allowed myself to be swept into the same cultural dictates.

I decided to write about it because in fact, when I’ve allowed myself to go on these excursions without feeling guilty, and then feel so alive with all of the senses and discoveries, I can’t imagine not being open and completely immersed in the present. What a delight. The beauty of not being swept into the guilts and obsession with whether or not one is keeping this agenda, is to be fully enmeshed in the moment, whether one is pulled to a new task, or waiting, pausing to notice a flickering of light or shadow, and being fully with that moment, overwhelmingly present. Life is full of these impressions, sensations, intuitions and discoveries. When one is in this moment, immersed, one can gather from it the jewels that can only be seen if they are beheld.

I have developed a habit of taking notes to the oral presentation of Oprah and Chopra, so here are the notes I took of today’s meditation, unedited. 21 day meditation on time: Day 3 – Recognizing and Healing Time Dysfunction

Oprah:

• Deepak calls time sickness; if it resonates with you; the heavy feeling that all you set out to accomplish that day isn’t going to get done, something that throws you off
• living in the moment means eliminating the highs and the lows, the high from checking off all the things, and just being in the moment
• Eckart Toole says if you’re sitting in the moment, recognizing the time spent in enjoyment and what it is that causes anxiety, leads you to the path to what it is that is fulfillment and your true calling.

Chopra:

• time is an experience that shifts depending on what happens on the inside
• besides the biological basis of time, there is the psychological aspect: when you do something that you’re passionate about, time flies, when you’re bored, time drags, when you’re doing something that has no meaning for you, time has been wasted
• we experience time according to our psychological state: when you’re in love and you’ve spent time with your beloved, an hour feels like a minute, when you’re suffering from depression, a minute feels like an hour
• modern life takes our experience of time to an extreme; time sickness is an epidemic; it’s the ultimate life-style disorder, because under the pressures of time, life isn’t lived
• we become robotically trained to measure every day by what we have achieved or haven’t: chores left undone, the relationship we didn’t have time for, the exercise we put off…: this is what it means to suffer from time sickness
• this is born from our own experience of time; we can change that experience any time we want
• how do we know if we relate to time in a dysfunctional way; consider the following symptoms: feeling like there is never enough time in the day, constantly looking at the clock and racing against it, feeling frustration and failure of not accomplishing what you wanted to, dreading the passage of time because it saps energy and youth
• simply telling someone to slow down doesn’t work, there has to be an inner shift in the right direction
• you’re getting over time sickness when you enjoy your experiences and take time to appreciate them (like the fact that i absolutely delight in listening to bird’s chirping back and forth, a high slicing pitch and a little clicks, and also looking at this other magpie building its nest from the sheds of grass in this back yard)
• you feel that your day is flowing well when you find time to feel relaxed and when your day worries are absent; time dysfunction isn’t about time itself but the mismatch between your perception and reality
• life can unfold naturally with a sense that you have all the time in the world
we don’t need better time management, we need a new state of mind
• as you experience yourself as present awareness, the symptoms of time sickness will melt away
