UN World Environment Day June 5th | Ethical Footprint | Ethical vs. Unethical Construction

I hadn’t known, had I not gone on the internet, that the United Nations declared a World Environment Day of June 5th. Fabulous that there is a designated day to be aware of the environment.

World Environment Day June 5th

On World Environment Day, and every day, we should all be thinking creatively about how to accommodate wildlife in our own lives. Trees, bushes, waterways, clean air and water, highway animal bridges and tunnels, bee highways with plants attracting pollinators, with a consciousness Promoting Smarter Wildlife Management.

I’d like to point out what I learned, walking around in neighborhoods that I love, because of their fabulous properties of trees and beautiful adornment of living plants, that naturally attract and welcome living animals.

To me, nothing, nothing is more spectacular than the natural world. And the properties with old money on this hill adjacent to where i live demonstrate their wisdom, in adorning and conserving as much nature as possible. You hear birds, see rabbits and other life hopping about.

This property with the yellow circle around it, is a disgrace. They wiped out thickly forested lot, to build a sprawling mansion, with not one tree left behind. I’d spray paint my feelings, except that it won’t bring the trees or life back that the owners destroyed, in order to build their outrageous sprawl, a desolate prison, with no life to regard.

It is an example of unethical behavior.

An ethical consumer looks for products which are both friendly to the environment and for the people who produce them.

The ecological footprint measures human demand on nature, i.e., the quantity of nature it takes to support people or an economy.
“An ‘ethical consumer’ looks for products which, above all, are both friendly to the environment and also the people who produce them. An ethical consumer is therefore aware of the consequences of production, consumption and disposal.”
Let the pictures do the talking. I avoid going down this street because i feel annoyance at the nouveau riche lack of heart and insight and sadness, knowing  that all of these lovely trees were wiped out, affecting so many different creatures. An elderly man whom I chatted with one evening 5 months or so ago, told me when I mentioned this reckless building, that the property had several hundred year old trees on it, in fact, from the looks of googlemaps before it was updated, dozens of trees.

I discovered recently with delight this property within a frisbee throw, catecornered across the street. As one approaches from several angles, all you see is a mini forest.

thickly forested green plot, before picture

thickly forested green plot, before picture

And what they did to the once forested property. This home could have been a third the size, and maintained a profoundly beautiful plot that their children could play in an that invites wonder and habitation by many species.

unethical building, cleared trees and all life

unethical_building_trees gone

This builder, knocked down, gutted, every single tree, every single one of them, to make this sprawling property with a tiny bit of lawn and a lot of asphalt to accommodate their cars. It is revolting. And the property across the street with the green ring, as you approach you only see, feel and hear the silence of a forest with birds. It is breathtakingly beautiful. So that the actual construction is engulfed, ringed by trees, except in the front. And the new building in the yellow, is what the builders created, destroying all life that was there, and making sure none of it will come back. They did not even plant bushes – very necessary for cover and a humane yard – and other plants with the intention to accommodate birds and animals – a Humane Backyard.

ethical_vs_unethical_building

All life that had been there or could walk or fly by, has no place to go, no life, no green, no water source, no tree for life, no butterfly or pollinator by-way, nothing. Just me, me, me and my big property that is hollow of life and nature’s delight.

IPCC Climate Change Report | Highest Recorded CO2 Levels & Arctic Temperatures | Bill Mckibben Discussing Significance of Rising CO2 | Greta Thunberg TED Talk | Enforcing Legislation

In November of 2018, an (IPCC) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report by internationally collaborating scientists, spoke of the nefarious consequences of global warming of 1.5º C.

Articles sprouted this last week regarding a report released by researchers at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory, who recorded record-setting temperatures this last Saturday, May 11th.

Carbon Dioxide Levels In The Atmosphere Hit Highest Mark In Human History, written by Nina Golgowski

Carbon dioxide levels in the Earth’s atmosphere have soared to a new high, one never before been seen in human history, researchers announced as temperatures near the Arctic circle rose into the 80s.”

These alarmingly warm temperatures came as a daily CO2 reading by atmospheric researchers on Saturday recorded a 415.26 parts per million (ppm) baseline.”

Rebecca Lindsey wrote in August 2018 Climate Change: Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide regarding the 2017 rate of carbon dioxide atmospheric levels as 405.0 ppm parts per million. She wrote this US government report from the (NOAA) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Science and Information for a Climate-Smart Nation.

A person passionately familiar with what this reading means, he started 350.org in 2008, stressing to educate the public about the need to cap CO2 atmospheric levels at 350. Well his target limit was exceeded in 2017 at 405.26 ppm, and the last week carbon concentrations surpassed 415 parts per million. My post was originally going to be another tally of my encounters with people sitting in or standing by their stationary vehicles with the engine left running. I will let this linger at the end, just to point out that despite the dramatic need to absolutely change the world’s reliance on fossil fuels and large industrial practices in general that disrupt ecological balances, it is absolutely up to all of us to find alternative ways of viewing what we take for granted and assume is a typical and natural behavior.

As Greta Thunberg mentioned in one of her first speeches, that to the Swedish public before the Parliament to explain her reasoning behind striking school as a 15 year old. She stated that most people are more fearful of having to adjust their behavior that relies on fossil fuels out of habit and convenience, than they are fearful of climate change itself. The problem is that it just isn’t quite grasped, it feels like a remote problem, like a remote-control war that you see short sound bites of that is happening across the globe. Well, the other major factor in peoples’ lack of concern, is the complete absence of reporting about it by the media or governments undertaking it as a major issue. Therefore the public is not only not informed, but often due to huge amounts of money poured into disinformation by petroleum industry lobbying groups, they are way misinformed.

Here is the now 16 year old audacious and articulate Swedish girl Greta Thunberg giving a TED talk about the dire need to act now to avert the most dramatic repercussions of climate change.

Greta Thunberg TED talk on climate change

Greta Thunberg TED talk on climate change

Yesterday, I came upon a couple nicely dressed, obvious professionals, involved in a conversation on the sidewalk, standing several meters from the large SUV parked there with the engine running. I cycled back around to direct my voice to them saying in the most gentle way possible, do you realize that we’re in a climate crisis, and CO2 is going from your vehicle into the atmosphere? Several minutes later I bicycled by a backhoe that was stationary, but the engine on, as two men worked by it, no person in the cab. As I cycled by their work van, I saw and felt that the engine was on, no one nearby. I circled back to the men to say -as gently as I could – why do you have your engines on? The guy at first looked at me, then when he realized I was making a ‘critical observation’, he ignored me. Finally he said coarsely, “Does anyone tell you how to ride your bike?”

I looked up the Department of Environmental Management of Rhode Island, the State where I’m living. Located it, went there, walking in with a back pack on a Friday afternoon, I already looked suspicious. My question, “WHY IS THIS NOT A LAW? You can generate income by fining people. When I first arrived to this town and realized as a bicyclist that consistently, in every socio economic neighborhood, people have a tendency to sit in their cars with the engine idling. In fact, plenty are not even in their cars, but near them, as they leave the engines running.

Fortunately the woman officer with whom I spoke understood the concerns, stated that there had been at one point anti-idling laws and that in fact in the more old money town of Newport, there is anti-idling legislation.

From the time that I was beginning to drive, before their was a threat of accelerating temperatures due to human activities; heat and transportation demands, I naturally knew that there was no reason to leave an engine running. It wastes fuel, it spews out exhaust.

Obviously what impacts the environment on a much larger scale, are the industries that mine for coal and oil and transport it, and use this energy on a large scale for industrial operations and large, institutional constructions.

Nevertheless, as populations continue to increase and more and more people come to demand having their own automobile or truck, the collective use affects the CO2 levels. There are plenty of reports that reveal that idling engines are contributing to the higher levels of Carbon Dioxide, a green house gas that is warming the earth as it concentrates heat.

Since there appears to be, even in this college town with an ivy league school, an uncanny disassociation among the population and workers for the University of the consequences of their actions. Since I’ve already written numerous letters to the Mayor, Governor and State Legislature, it seemed the next move, to bring this to their attention. The officer with whom I spoke really warmed up to me after her initial skeptical looking expression, I said that if you employ me, I could make the government a thousand dollars an hour. She laughed. She told me that rather than telling people about the climate consequences, tell them that there are fines for idling.

Let’s educate ourselves as much as possible and talk with one another about the best things we can do to change our behaviors, while the new politicians on the block like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez do their best to confront the established powers and force the government to stop their silence, and begin orchestrating the Green New Deal.

Have you Heard of Global Warming? | Apparently 60% of Providence Hasn’t | Simple Solutions | Turn off Your Idling Engines

Make America Cool Again

Make America Cool Again

You know that Facebook post a little while back in which a kid in his rear car seat was sobbing about the fact that people are killing animals? Well I’m feeling that way, except that the devastation is channelling into bewilderment and anger.

Although I had already heard that various oil companies had known of the dangers of extracting and burning petroleum…it wasn’t until I read this article two days ago “Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change” By Nathaniel Rich
Photographs and Videos by George Steinmetz….that laid it all out so clearly, that I feel fully incensed.

As I bicycle by idling cars continually and witness the complete disconnect – I realize that they are completely unaware.

My feeling of exasperation is not going away.

Losing Earth the Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change

Losing Earth the Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change

Talking to a German woman today I asked her if Germans leave their car engines idling, to which she retorted, that they always turn them off, and are aware that their individual and collective actions affect the environment.

Is the USA the United States of Amnesia or Apathy? Certainly the populace who have not been informed are not to blame? Whose responsibility is it? Parents? Teachers? Leaders? Media?

Whew! Glad that the internet has still not been reined in by corporate buyers as the rest of the mainstream media, for the remaining population of the US of A appears to be as misinformed and mislead by unimportant information as China or North Korea. Thing is, we’re a continent so removed and insulated from the rest of the world that few are aware of the impact of how phat they are living compared to the rest of the world and the damage has already been seeded.

Witnessing the exorbitant number of people I pass sitting in their cars with their engines idling, it is clearly apparent, that the people are clueless about how their actions are tied in to the climate crisis that is like a mirage, no one really quite grasping that it is real, nor particularly concerned or aware that there is even a problem. I hear the play of revving engines and motorized machoism hitting the streets regularly along with the routine beeping of car horns to signal the rest of the world that someone is locking their car. It is utterly baffling that no one is aware of their individual and collective impact on noise and air pollution of their immediate environment, much less how their actions affect the rest of the planet.

With reference to the media or governments’ lack of response, talk about betrayal. The likelihood of climate ruin through rampant fossil fuel use was first acknowledged over 150 years ago and fully understood and undeniably something to act upon 50 years ago, but informed bureaucrats and the media machine, did nothing.

US Govts Misleading Public 50 years

US Government administrationss Misleading Public over 50 years regarding the connection between petroleum extraction and burning and subsequent climate catastrophe

In addition to polluting the immediate environment, idling cars and indiscriminate use of plastics are collectively suffocating the planet.

I was creating a letter, which I was not able to send through the form within the RI governor’s office website.

Climate change is real, enforce laws against idling engines to generate income.

This article should be required reading for someone running a US State government office. I have been riding bicycle every day and night for the last 13 weeks throughout the city of Providence, RI. I have discovered that no matter where I go – regardless of age, gender, race, socio economic class (in fact it seems to be more pronounced among middle class professionals), 60% to 80% or more of the population are habitually sitting in their cars with their engines idling. This is not for a quick pickup, but for sustained periods, leaving their engines running. I encounter, regardless of district or neighborhood, a startling number of cars, per block, per minute, with people sitting in their cars, or on top of their cars, or walking away from their vehicles, with their engine left idling. Perpetually running engines. I feel the heat as I cycle by and smell the fumes.

idling cars contribute to global warming

idling cars contribute to global warming

I created this sign and printed some, but decided to focus on addressing the issue to the mayor, legislature and now governor, since not too many people (being facetious here) like zero, were interested in hearing what I had to say – even with kindness in my eyes and heart filled intent.

In fact, there appears to be a complete lack of awareness among the population of the fact

1) that global warming exists at all, and is happening all over the planet, now, every minute.
2) that people in Providence (collectively), affect the air quality of not only other people and animals (if they still exist) in the immediate vicinity of their vehicle but are contributing to the ecological disaster that is happening all over the globe
3) that their actions as a privileged and ignorant few (or their parent’s generation) are most responsible for the inception of the warming process in the first place

What is going on?

• 31 other US states have anti-idling legislation; either statewide or in a particular municipality or county
• The NYC metropolitan area have $2,000 fines per bus if caught idling.
• Citizens in Germany, Scandinavia and some Central American countries turn off their engines, ALWAYS, some even during red lights. They are completely cognizant of the ecological emergency and climate crisis, with which the United States is perpetually not dealing with, regardless of the fact that we are the primary perpetrators of this crime to humanity and to all other life forms and systems that had inherited life on this planet.

What are you going to do about it?

It is unconscionable that this is happening and no one is doing anything – and just a small percentage of scientists and individuals are even aware. Continued political deadlocks and misinformation due to participation in an economic system based on perpetual growth and profit that has already killed 87% of the species that have been on this planet. Large swaths of the US turned into a dustbowl and submersion of most coastal cities.

This is not an economic issue, this is above economics or the Gross Domestic Product.

This is about whether we want to take steps ourselves, together, to do what our federal government has not been able to achieve, and in fact has turned a blind eye to and deliberately not informed the public.

Human actions are creating an inhospitable planet for all other life forms through headlong consumption and a complete disconnection with the natural world and complete manipulation from the advertising machine.

We are destroying the habitats of most life forms on the planet. At this rate, the inevitable 4 degrees of warming will wipe out the human race. It is your responsibility as a leader, to take measures to impose legislations that will raise the awareness of idling and censure the actions of your populace.

https://sustainableamerica.org/blog/anti-idling-laws-around-the-nation/

https://www.edf.org/attention-drivers-turn-your-idling-engines

http://ksltv.com/394228/students-test-ozone-levels-cars-idle-schools/?

Officially the population of Providence is 179,300. 60 to 70 percent of the people who are in their vehicles, leave their engine on. Let’s say 60% of the inhabitants regularly sit in their vehicles with their engines idling = that’s about 107,500 people.

A fine to cars for idling of $50 x 107,500 residents = $5,375,000. That’s 5 million. Fines to diesel engines – city, state and independent contractors caught idling could be $200 + per vehicle. Fines for cutting down trees, $1,000, for endangering other creatures’ habitats through negligence or pollutants, ranging from $300 per individual to $10,000’s per business.

If nothing else, imposing fines would be a deterrent, and would immediately alert and inform people of their participation in increasing global temperatures and carbon monoxide levels, contributing to the continued increase CO2 levels and global temperatures rising to levels that in 30 years could prohibit human life. If citizens are not informed of this through education or the media outlets, it is your responsibility as a leader to recognize the crisis, and to enforce education and implementation of penalties as deterrents. Ecocide and homicide continues to take place, by ignoring the issue. Fines to coal and petroleum companies, could be in the $100, millions.

India planted 66 Million trees in 12 hours, https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/india-plant-66-million-trees-12-hours-environment-campaign-madhya-pradesh-global-warming-climate-a7820416.html by creating the possibility and enforcing it, certainly in a manner that brought people together to do something that will benefit each.

We could have many simple solutions through seemingly small actions, in steps that could make an enormous difference. Such as;

asking people to turn off their air conditioning units (except for hospitals and care facilities) – 3 days of the week – as a starter.
To attempt car pooling, public transportation, bicycling or walking several days of the week
To authorize penalties to the use of plastics
Create jobs for people to educate people about plastics
To inform people about how their participation in using plastics and idling cars are collectively suffocating the planet in addition to polluting the immediate environment

Measures could be taken globally to do this together as the human race, instead of being in competition with one another in terms of a race to increase the GDP.

With the fines, you could use the money to pay a fleet of bicycle cops to enforce the law and establish a safe bicycle infrastructure in various municipalities and between them as well as money to invest in public transportation.

After approaching people individually, talking to the mayor, sending a letter to the mayor’s office, talking to someone in a state legislative office to convey the message about the need to enact legislation to raise peoples awareness, I find it necessary to contact the governor.

Let’s do this together and make America a global leader in dealing with a crisis that we have alone caused, instead of turning a blind eye.

What You Don’t Know, Can Hurt You; therefore it’s imperative to read between the lies.

Knowledge is Power

George Monbiot, who consistently extends the risk to actually speak the truth about the environment, and specifically the political and financial obstacles that block change, just wrote this article. Don’t Look Now

Monbiot is bemused that we talk of climate change in such benign terms, when in fact we should be talking about climate breakdown or in my sounds climactic breaks.

George Monbiot writes that “The media avoids the subject of climate breakdown – to do otherwise is to bring the entire infrastructure of thought crashing down.

Batman hitting the earth, oil oozing out, climate destruction

Batman: Hitting the earth up like a Piñata, for profit.  In this case petroleum, with the resultant climate destruction.

The What The Health documentary film is about the collusion of industries in their misinformation of the public about diet and health, due to profit motives. The industries which use the land’s resources precipitously to maintain the beef, pork and dairy industries, are in fact the same industries which sponsor various American government health organizations, who subsequently toe the line of their sponsors, and withhold the truth. Instead they tout that beef and dairy are good, that there’s no conclusive evidence that diet has AnYThinG to do with health and dis ease, when in fact what you eat has EveRyThinG to do with health of humans, the obvious inhumane and devastating toll on the livestock and the health of the planet’s ecosystems and climate.

What The Health, documentary film, collusion of corporate profits with misinformation, diet and health

Here’s the trailer of the “What The Health” documentary with English Subtitles. Wow, are the filmmakers ever clearly laying out the truth! Medical Symbol, Caduceus

Medical Symbol Caduceus

It appears that a number of the top go-to organizations in the United States whose goal is to eradicate the population’s biggest medical threats – cancer and diabetes – are not following the Hippocratic Oath “In its original form, it requires a new physician to swear, by a number of healing gods, to uphold specific ethical standards.” Rather, they appear to be swayed by ‘corpocrisy’ (my made-up word combining corporate and hypocrisy).
I hadn’t included among the top medical threats ‘climate destruction’, of which the actions of the meat, fish, petroleum and pharmaceutical industries are antecedent and causal, with clear subsequent deleterious results.

hypocrisy definition, pretense of having a virtuous character or moral principles

As revealed from What the Health, The sponsors of the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association are the meat and dairy as well as pharmaceutical industries. Their message promotes misinformation about food and diet. Rather than finding the cause of the diseases they purport they wish to cure,  they are towing the line of their sponsors. In our consumer oriented capitalism paradigm where corporate profit-driven motives rule, buying = profit. Consumer purchasing is the motif which bleeds of hypocrisy. As What the Health discloses, the biggest sponsors of several American health organizations are the very industries that most impact the climate, and the health of population. These meat and dairy industries sway their message dramatically away from the truth about diet, with the intent to mislead the public.

The sponsors of the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association are the meat and dairy as well as pharmaceutical industries. Their message promotes misinformation about food and diet, for profit motives rather than finding the cause of the disease and curing it.

The What The Health documentary drives at how an entire population is mislead, by the health organizations themselves, in collusion with the government and the meat and derry industries. The filmmakers in their relentless research, ultimately uncover that the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association promote ‘diets’ on their websites which feature the very foods that cause the diseases which they purport their aim is to cure. As they press further, they discover that the biggest sponsors for these top government health agencies are the industries selling the food, that causes the very illness they aim to study. And the recipes they display on their websites espouse what will profit their sponsors.

The role of the pharmaceutical industry, which reaps in trillions of dollars, is not to eradicate or prevent the illness, but to treat the symptoms with and endless cocktail of pills. These little fixes keep the patients’ sick enough, to continue to adhere to taking their prescribed medications.

The messages of the medical societies who toe the line of their sponsors, the – meat, derry and pharmaceutical industries – assure continued profits for doctors, the healthcare profession, hospitals and the cattle, pig, fish and agricultural industries which support these as well as the pharmaceutical companies who bank on illness, not health.

Among the facts the film discloses, is the risks of processed meat and further on dairy, linked to cancer and diabetes.

Processed Meat direct link to increasing risk of colorectal Cancer

Processed Meat has direct link to increasing risk of colorectal Cancer

The film is a sequel to “Cowspiracy”, which was created by the same people; filmmaker Kip Andersen and videographer Keegan Kuhn. With the backing of producer Joaquin Phoenix, this documentary allows the viewer to penetrate a number of degrees further into the looking glass.

Cowspiracy points out the caustic environmental effects of the agricultural feedstock, livestock and dairy industries. “The amount of water, land and fuel used for differing diets varies greatly…Taking into consideration that 1lb of beef requires upwards of 2500 gallons of water to produce compared to only 25 gallons for 1lb of wheat, the water footprint of a person consuming a high meat diet could be 100x greater than that of a person consuming only plant foods.”

conspiracy definition

We’ve perhaps overused the word conspiracy to the point that it becomes a benign term referring to ideas that should be dismissed because they are awash in backwash and hogwash. However, when looking at its true definition, conspiracy refers to a “treacherous or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons”.

People who are not doing what they say, or saying what they mean.

A number of years ago I jumped out of my seat with excitement when an in-depth news reporting tv show “60 Minutes”, featured a story about Tulane University as the first medical school in the United States to offer mandatory cooking classes for first year medical students. Recognizing that good nutrition and diet is absolutely relevant to health, they figured that teaching medical students about food, nutrition and cooking, will allow them to authentically educate and inform their patients.

Former Vice President Al Gore attempted to educate the public 20 + years ago with his documentary entitled the Inconvenient Truth. Post the COP21 in Paris and attempts to reach an accord about the Climate, he released more recently, An Inconvenient Sequel.

His sequel just came out.

Many, many social, environmental and political activist groups along with world environmental and animal organizations continually use their talents and research to inform the public. What we need now are a buildup of CCC’s, Climate Crisis Cooperatives. People working together in all different capacities to grow local, buy local, and work towards renewable energy and transport.

Hippocrates Food is the medicine

Changing one’s diet away from ingesting meat and dairy with its inherent carcinogenic properties, can effectively reduce weight, diminish fat levels in the blood (lower cholesterol) and give people the chance to reduce to completely alleviate the need to take any pill at all.

Tulane University proactively paved the path of culinary medicine, “Scalpel or spatula? Medical students have new required cooking course

The subject of Culinary Medicine has since been evolving.

Other schools have since followed. Culinary Medicine: Teaching the importance of nutrition in medical school Wow, this is an article about Penn State University jointly with the Hershey Medical Center, which are in the vicinity of my home town in Pennsylvania, cool.

As mentioned in a former blog, https://digesthis.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/health-stretching-exercising-the-body-and-mind-farmacy/, a medical doctor, Dr. Weiss, stopped his practice to create a ‘farmacy’ cooperative in the state of New Jersey.

Dr. Weiss Ethos Health Farmacy

In other words, the healthiest way to go by far, is to eat a vegetarian, and particularly vegan diet (meat minus dairy). This in itself will clear up a person’s ‘system’ so that they go to the source of the problem (the inflammation coming from eating the wrong stuff (meat and dairy) and then not having to take a cocktail of pills, which never go after the source, but sort of stabilize the illness, and payments, indefinitely.

The best advice that keeps reappearing, is to continue to think globally and act locally. The more people use their own hands, words and mouths to grow locally and buy locally, and educate themselves through actively engaging in experimental actions and changing their diets and habits towards healthy ones, the more we will adaptively change our lives to exist in harmony with our earth and its creatures.

Biggest Threat to Renewable Energy: Politics of Oil Industry Greed | Your Voice Against Monopolies | Ecological Transitions2

Basically it’s like this. The earth has been warming due to increasing concentrations of (CO2) carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which serves like a blanket, containing the molecules and thus increasing the temperature. There are various man-made components affecting this, most of it due to industrialized processes; oil, gas and coal extraction among the biggest culprits, with industrialized agriculture trends also contributing to a nefarious impact.

EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, CO2

EPA Environmental Protection Agency on CO2

As the EPA site of the United States government describes, “The main human activity that emits CO2 is the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) for energy and transportation, although certain industrial processes and land-use changes also emit CO2.”

There have been scatterings of renewable energy projects around for years and new ones emerging, despite the intention of stock-holders in petroleum industries from keeping them from floating.

A huge project is underway in Morocco which is the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant, powered by the Saharan sun, set to help renewables provide almost half the country’s energy by 2020.

It’s from this article Morocco Poised to become a Solar Superpower with launch of Desert Mega-Project

The project, the biggest of its kind in Europe, will have a total installed peak capacity of 6.3 megawatts, and should generate enough energy to power 1,800 homes in its first year.
In an article in his blog Rigging the Market, George Monbiot mentions that the oil industry actually had done their own studies of the impacts of their actions on the environment decades ago, and proceeded to conceal their findings of the malevolent effects. He mentions, “But some renewables firms are being tanked by the same forces: just as natural gas prices plunge, governments like the UK’s are stripping them of their subsidies.”

“Already, according to the IMF, more money is spent, directly and indirectly, on subsidizing fossil fuels than on funding health services. The G20 countries alone spend over three times as much public money on oil, gas and coal than the whole world does on renewable energy. In 2014, subsidies for fossil fuel production in the UK reached £5 billion. Enough? Oh no. While essential public services are being massacred through want of funds, last year the government announced a further £1.3 billion in tax breaks for oil companies in the North Sea. Much of this money went to companies based overseas. They must think we’re mad.” However, Ramsay Dunning in this article “COP21: Co-operative voice is being heard in the EU” mentions that Co-operative Energy has been active over the last 12 months in both REScoop and Co-operatives Europe’s Energy Working Group, recognizing that as one door closes in the UK, another one may open in Europe. “Cooperatives Europe is part of an EU project on renewable energy cooperatives together with cooperatives from across Europe to promote and develop them.”

Monbiot discusses the politics of money in the oil industry and how much this in itself impedes progress in all of the renewable industries – wind, solar, wave, biomass, etc – which would actually reduce these rising temperatures; from the dirty activities of the petrochemical industries (oil, gas and coal extraction) that have been denigrating the environment, polluting air and water and by virtue of rising temperatures alone, corrupting and dismantling the balance of the biosphere. Humans are presently witnessing far more severe weather patterns due to unprecedented draughts and flooding, and epic storms. Yet human habitat can to a degree be rebuilt after the fires and landslides and floods. However it’s a different story for other inhabitants of the earth; from coral reef bleaching to animals dying off that are very small on the bio chain, these then affect larger marine and land mammals. Not to mention the chemical wastes and biohazards that are put into the water and atmosphere due to human industrial farming, resulting in other die-offs of species; i.e. bees and other pollinators. It appears that the smallest creatures are affected the most, which subsequently directly affect human communities; with disease epidemics that are exacerbated with rising global temperatures.

The most startling thing, is that the human condition which has tended in the last decades to be more focused on material displays of wealth and economic gain over actually using our brain power and hearts towards a real spiritual transformation that is possible, has been stuck in a fixation with making short-term profit gains, without having the sensitivity or empathy to give a hoot about anyone or any creature whose lives are affected by their actions.

And in the increasing symptom of monopolization of power, which was already taking place as the New World was beginning to make its entrance on the global platform, this trend has basically snow-balled. Though monopolies may have had their place contributing to better organization to do large-scale public works, “Monopoly is the extreme case in capitalism. It is characterized by a lack of competition, which can mean higher prices and inferior products.”

Those with money who invest it well, often stealthily, gain power and more leverage. And as this game evolves, the equation of intelligence and leadership with political sovereignty has been replaced with who has the most money to buy the election. There have been so many actions taking place behind closed doors, with people placated with entertainment and distracted by being so busy and feeling powerless to change the system, that people – by not voting and not caring – have let democracy become a hollow symbol.

It’s been a trend for a decade or three, the continued gobbling up of companies by a larger one who opts to buy up the competition, rather than allowing it to survive. I guess it seems enticing to have the money dangled in front of you. Like the farmers fields that I have seen disappearing in the town where I grew up in central Pennsylvania, but the trend is everywhere. Developers buy the land, contractors establish new housing communities that appear pretty quickly, which have these euphemistic names like ‘Greener Pastures’ or ‘Sunny side Meadows blah blah blah.

In addition to big money affecting politics from corporate bastions, individuals with enormous wealth and investment in petroleum industry and its bi-products also corrupts, such as the Koch Brothers.

In the Rolling Stone magazine, Tim Dickinson writes in The Koch Brothers’ Dirty War on Solar Power “But the birth of Big Solar poses a grave threat to those who profit from burning fossil fuels. And investor-owned utilities, together with Koch-brothers-funded front groups like American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), are mounting a fierce, rear-guard resistance at the state level – pushing rate hikes and punishing fees for homeowners who turn to solar power…Republican Gov. Rick Scott’s narrow 2014 re-election was financed by more than $1.1 million in contributions from the IOUs – investor-owned utilities.

In another article, Inside the Koch Brothers’ Toxic Empire Dickinson writes, “The enormity of the Koch fortune is no mystery. Brothers Charles and David are each worth more than $40 billion. The electoral influence of the Koch brothers is similarly well-chronicled. The Kochs are our homegrown oligarchs; they’ve cornered the market on Republican politics and are nakedly attempting to buy Congress and the White House. Their political network helped finance the Tea Party and powers today’s GOP…The toxic history of Koch Industries is not limited to physical pollution. It also extends to the company’s business practices, which have been the target of numerous federal investigations, resulting in several indictments and convictions, as well as a whole host of fines and penalties.”

Recently driving across the country, I encountered just a few renewable energy projects, although I drove through southern states along flat areas with plenty of wind and as the desert approached, plenty of sun. As I heard more and more Christian leaning radio stations driving an automobile, I didn’t really see many projects taking hold that were utilizing these resources. However, entering California and approaching Los Angeles from the East, I was delighted to see this windy plain used extensively with one farm of windmills.

Thames Water announced work on a huge floating solar array, equivalent to eight Wembley football pitches, begun in London this week. Just over 23,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels will be floated on the reservoir near Walton-on-Thames.

This article “California’s First Offshore Wind Power Project Faces Environmental Headwinds” describes that again, funding is something to navigate. “Pollution-free, renewable energy for some 300,000 homes could arrive on the California coast in the next decade if a new wind farm plan can navigate the contentious climate that thus far has derailed all offshore power projects in the state since 1969.” Margaret Bruder of the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University commented on this article: “Have you ever seen a strip coal mining operation? have you ever lived near a coal power plant. If you think wind turbines are an eye sore take a close look at these too dirty eye sores. The only difference is they are not in your backyard. And as for nuclear power–they might be “clean” energy but we have no idea what is going to happen to the spent fuel rods that have a half life of thousands of years. Do you want to live near their storage tanks when the concrete cracks and crumbles which we all know is likely ot happen in Michigan climate.”

Even more abundant than sun or wind, are wave energy.

Carol the blogger in her Moose-themed residence at her first WWOOF experience in Arizona

Here’s a pic of me, the blogger in my ‘moose lake lodge’ residence in the Sonoran desert where I’m participating in my first WWOOF experience on the Veteran’s Ranch, a means of avoiding homelessness while at the same time being very interested in learning about farming techniques from the pros – the people who run the farms and ranches – and I absolutely love and adore animals of every type.

And I’ve started to take videos of the animals, with the incentive to capture the sounds, to then weave into some new music (sounds on the ranch 🙂

Carol Keiter aka nomadbeatz ~ As an avid blogger who is presently picking up where I left off with my eBook to complete it and and beginning again to compose music, I ask you rather unambiguously and unabashedly to please donate, if you are able. !-))

PayPal Donate Button

In addition to the fact that donations are always welcome and appreciated, I just discovered to day February 20th, 2016 patreon, which I am very happy to join and am about to create an artist profile. It is a very similar concept to something I conjectured a month or so ago: wishing there was an artist residency somewhere where the artists can collaborate if they choose, yet which is based on earning money for what they create. They are paid, as they commit to producing work. Well, patron is not a residency, yet it does offer capital, and I’m pretty stoked to have discovered it. Certainly it will act as a motivator for all artists, lighting a fire to keep them producing new work!!! I’ll sign on to patreon as a blogger/photographer/illustrator/author creating a profile tomorrow, and will be de light ed to find some patrons encouraging me to keep on producing work!
