COP26 | Facing Existential Crisis–We Can Turn this Around if We Choose | COP26 Backdoor | Kiss the Ground

Wow, here is a super powerful speech by António Guterres, the United Nations secretary general, calling on world leaders to escalate climate action, equating the world’s current track to “digging our own graves” and “treating the earth as our toilet”, during the opening ceremony of the COP26 summit in Glasgow.

The speech by the UN secretary general, very simply states accurate points.

If, as a leader of a wealthy country of the global north, you can’t hear what he is saying nor respond with a conscience to FINALLY change what your priorities are, you should step down.

We need leaders who are there for all of us and for biodiversity, not greedy cowards who only want to pocket money from the BIG Oil, Ag and Pharma industries, etc.

António Guterres, the United Nations secretary general,

Remarks by H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly

Glasgow,

October 31,  2021

“Excellencies,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Allow me to be candid, for you are my family:

We are facing an existential crisis

We have the capacities and resources to address this crisis,

But we are simply not doing enough.

We must be honest about this, with ourselves, with each other, and with the rest of the world.

We have had decades to argue the facts about climate change, about the power of renewables, about the fine details of monitoring or cost-sharing.

Yet, we have still failed to act with the conviction and determination required.

That may be a hard truth, but it is the truth.

Another truth: we are entirely capable of turning this around, if we so choose.”

“My friends,

We have the science.

We have the resources.

We agree on the urgency.

What then is holding us back?

Only one variable remains… and it is us.

We have to make the choice to address climate change.

We have to choose the hard but necessary actions.

We have to listen to the science and, increasingly, our global population, who are demanding action.

……. We have run out of excuses.

It is time to do the right thing.

In the words of Frankie the dinosaur, who addressed the General Assembly,

let us not choose EXTINCTION.

Let us work together as one global family and use the capacities and capabilities at hand to do what needs to be done.

Let us get this done.”

Greta Thunberg Swedish SchoolStrike Climate Activist Demands | Informing the Public & Declaring an Emergency

Greta Thunberg speech Austrian World summit

A year ago the Swedish 15 year old student, Greta Thunberg, began striking her school and sitting before the Swedish Parliament. Her demand was for her government and the press to be honest about the issue of climate change and to inform the public. She was initially prompted to strike after wondering why there had been silence on the issue? Why had it not been foremost on everyone’s agenda and in every news story?

In her present speech at the Austrian World Summit in Vienna, Greta Thunberg has yet another powerful delivery. She mentions that millions of students were inspired around the world to strike school for the climate. Yet students can’t do what all of you adults can. This needs to be declared an emergency and made top priority.

She reprimands the audience that they haven’t been living up to their responsibility. Reminding them in her straightforward tone that, ‘humans are capable of so much, yet, still, hardly anyone is aware of the gravity of the situation. Most of the world is uninformed that it is even an issue at all.’ She admonishes them, ‘we need to know’.
