Soul of Soil | A Living, Breathing Entity |  Mycelium ~ Underground ‘woodwide web’

it was first at environmental awareness several day exhibitions at the University of Arizona in Tucson that I learned about the qualities of soil. Prior to that, i had never thought about it. It is what is in the soil that provides nutrients to the food that grows from it. This article, The Soul of Soil reminds me of this.

“Recognizing soil as a form of life reframes our perception of another interconnected, self-regulating system: Earth. We owe many of Earth’s defining features — its breathable atmosphere, blue sky, mineral diversity, ocean chemistry and wildfires — to life. Over time, Earth and life, much like soil and the organisms that maintain it, formed a single evolving system that has endured for billions of years. The living earth beneath our feet mirrors our larger living planet.”

What is quite spectacular, is that within the soil beneath trees is a “woodwide web,” coined by a German forester Peter Wohlleben, because it’s through the mycelium that trees “communicate.”.  Britt Holewinski, describes the underground mycorrhizal network in his article Underground Networking: The Amazing Connections Beneath Your Feet
